Andy Clarke - Boat Safety Scheme Examiner

Boat Safety Examinations and Checks on the Oxford Canal and River Thames

As an approved Boat Safety Scheme Examiner, based close to the Oxford Canal and River Thames in Oxfordshire, I specialise in carrying out Boat Safety Scheme Examinations.

I am based near the South Oxford Canal in Oxfordshire within a few miles of Lower Heyford, Thrupp, Kidlington, Oxford, Aynho, Banbury and most of the Upper Thames including Abingdon, Sandford, Eynsham, Swinford, Bablock Hythe, Newbridge, Radcot, and Lechlade.

I am a founder member of the Association of Boat Safety Examiners and, having spent over 25 years on the inland waterways, working as a senior hire fleet engineer and as a self employed marine engineer, I am happy to advise on all aspects of compliance with the technical requirements of the Boat Safety Scheme.

Details of the Boat Safety Scheme can be found at the Scheme's own website.

I have information on preparing your boat for the Examination, Boat Safety Scheme FAQs, booking a Boat Safety Examination, and the BSS Re-examination Policy.

Costs

For BSS Examinations at any location the costs are as follows:

Inboard engined boats: £150, or £140 if no gas system is installed

Outboard engined boats: £140, or £130 if no gas system is installed

Small outboard-powered cruisers with no gas or electrical systems: £120

The fees allow for a reasonable amount of time on site, but in the event that extra time is required an additional charge may be made. This will usually only be necessary if the boat has not been well prepared or there are unusual systems on board.

My normal hours of work for Boat Safety Checks and Examinations are Monday to Friday 8.00am to 6.00pm. Saturday appointments are available by request at no extra charge. Discounts can be negotiated for more than one Boat Safety Scheme Examination at the same location and date.

The examination fee includes the issuing of all appropriate paperwork, inclusive of the Certificate when the boat passes.

Travelling

The first 25 miles is included in the fee. Unfortunately, due to the increasing cost of fuel, I have to charge for anything over 25 miles at a rate of £0.60/mile.

Re-examinations

The fee for any re-examination is £40 for up to 1 hour on-site. BSS policy requires that re-examinations must be carried out within 3 calendar months, otherwise a full examination will be required.

Payment

Payment is normally required in advance or on the day in cash or by cheque, if this is not possible I can invoice for payment by bank transfer or on-line credit/debit card payments. There is a 4% surcharge for card payments. Certificates are only issued after full payment has been received and cleared.

There is no VAT on any of my charges

Advice

My aim is to help you ensure that your boat gains a Boat Safety Scheme Certificate, not look for ways to fail it! However, in the event that it fails to meet the Boat Safety Scheme requirements, I can offer advice and guidance on methods of meeting the Boat Safety Scheme standards that will help to minimise the costs. I do not carry out any rectification work, but I am happy to advise owners who wish to carry out the work themselves, or liase with any third party engaged to carry out the work.

Advice by phone or email is free, site visits will necessarily be charged at an agreed rate.
